During the course of the night, one of guy's from the group of men standing on the wall, made his way over to our table and sparked some harmless conversation with my friend and I. During this interaction, the question came up of what grammar school I attended; to that I responded, "Vanderpoel." Eventually, another guy from the group (Don) whooshed his way over where we were sitting and asked with great enthusiasm, "Who went to Vanderpoel?". I turned my head, gave him the up and down look and said “Me!”. With some mild skepticism in his voice he tested me and asked, “Well, what’s the school song then?”. I looked at him and responded, “I don't know, all I remember was the first four words”—Vanderpoel school, Vanderpoel school! He side-eyed me and basically called me a bluff since I couldn’t recite the school song. However, I knew all of the teachers, students, and the principal of the school! I’m not for certain if I gave him my number that night or not, but it is not shocking that we didn’t make our “love connection” at that point in time.
After several months, we continued to see each other out at different events and came to the conclusion that maybe we should hangout from time to time.I shot him a text on the 4th of July, and jokingly asked him to come and lock up all these people around my house for lighting fireworks. By my surprise, he only responded “Ok”. I thought to myself, the nerve of him to respond so aimlessly, because it’s obvious I’m trying to spark conversation. “Just ok!” I muttered to myself. “Welp, I won’t be sending him anymore text messages”.
Eventually, we both did reconnect, and I agreed to hangout. To my surprise, I had a fabulous time! I remember telling my homegirl, “he's going to be my best-friend”. Needless to say, we drowned ourselves in each other. At any opportunity we would hang out until the wee hours of the morning, go on countless dates, share long conversations on the phone, traveled, and just enjoyed each other’s company. Don't get me wrong we spent a lot of time together but it was nothing short of a roller-coaster, and man I’m talking about the first dip on the American Eagle. Before we knew it, this roller coaster had been going for the past 8 years. We shared the noise of laughter, the feeling of uncertainty, the tears of joy and pain, and lastly the best feeling of them all—the protection.
"The Hoard’s Proposal"
I knew a few months into our friendship that this was the woman that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. We have been inseparable ever since. Nothing about this relationship went according to plan. That perfect moment seemed to elude us. All the while, we continued enjoying each other and have done so for the past 8 years. One morning I woke up and realized that the perfect time would never be perfect, so I set out on trying to make this the most memorable for my love. If you know Deidra, she is very nosey. She was always ear hustling and sneaking around trying to figure it all out. There was no way I was going to pull this off without enlisting some help. We were planning a graduation trip for Ethan and Morgan which was Father’s Day weekend. I figure this is a great time to pop the question.
It was in the name of the graduates, so she thought. I rented the penthouse suite at the Aria to accommodate the family and had the event catered by my cousin Darius who cooks for the Las Vegas Raiders. I enlisted her cousin Dominique to get the party favors and coordinate her friends flying in for the big surprise. Everybody knew it was happening but Deidra. She was helping me prepare her own surprise engagement. Go figure!When I got the okay, we went to the suite, and everyone got a scratch off lottery ticket as a kickoff to our Vegas trip. Deidra started scratching hers off and was complaining that she had a ticket with terrible prizes until she scratched off the other side. She was halfway through when she read the words, Will You Marry Me? 
She started crying and talking in tongue and I grabbed her hand and began talking to my love! I told her nothing goes as planned but at the end of the day the results are the same. The mission is accomplished. There is no me without you. I had to make this memorable. To give you something back for everything you have given me for the past 8 years. I have never found anyone who has captivated the essence of love within me. You deserve the very best, someone who will back you without limits, let you grow without borders, and love you without end!
