Holland America Line - Cruise Critic ...

V, VA, VB, VC, VD, VE, VF, VH, VQ, and VT all denote Verandah (balcony) staterooms, and the primary difference between them is their location on the ship and the size/type of their private balcony. Staterooms share core amenities, but the specific category determines the exact position, potential obstructions, and balcony specifications, which in turn dictate the price point.

General Amenities
All verandah staterooms generally include:
  • Two lower beds convertible to one queen-size bed
  • Sitting area
  • Private bathroom with a shower and a tub (most categories)
  • Floor-to-ceiling windows with a door to a private balcony
  • Standard amenities like bathrobes, Elemis bath products, mini-bar, safe, and flat-panel TV

Category Differences
The categories are generally ranked from highest (most desirable/best location) to lowest (most forward/aft, potentially obstructed) by Holland America, though personal preference varies:

Category  Primary Distinction Details
VQ Spa Verandah Located on Deck 10 (Lido Deck) or Deck 11 (Observation Deck). Includes special spa amenities (e.g., organic bathrobes, specific breakfast menu, iPod docking station), close proximity to the Greenhouse Spa, and typically 4-foot deep balconies.
V Premium Location Midship locations on desirable decks (e.g., Decks 5 and 6) with larger balconies (often 7 ft deep). Considered among the best options due to location and balcony size.
VA - VE Location & Deck Level These categories are primarily sorted by location and deck. VA is generally considered better located (midship on higher decks) than VB, which is better than VC, and so on. The location moves progressively more forward or aft, or to lower decks. Balcony depth is typically 6 ft for VA-VC, 7.5 ft for some Deck 4 VD, and 4.5 ft for Deck 5 VE.
VT "Viewing" Balcony Located on Deck 11 (Observation Deck). Features a French or "Juliet" balcony (meaning you can step out but not sit on it). They are situated high up, which some find desirable.
VF/VH Potential Obstructions/Location These are generally the lowest-ranked verandah categories. VF and VH are often on lower decks (e.g., Deck 4) or far forward/aft, and may have solid steel railings instead of clear Plexiglas, partially obstructing the view when seated. VH specifically indicates a partially obstructed view.

Signature Suites (SS, SU, SY, SZ)
Available until January 30, 2026

Starting At: $3,245.00
Deposit: $600.00 per person

Eurodam Cabin SS6055 - Category SS ...
SS, SU, SY, and SZ categories all refer to Signature Suites, which share the same core amenities and size range but differ primarily in their location on the ship. The letter following the main category letter typically indicates the specific deck and location, with categories ordered alphabetically (e.g., SS is a higher category/better location than SZ).

Key Similarities (Signature Suites)
All Signature Suites generally offer:
  • Size of approximately 273–456 sq. ft, including a private verandah.
  • Two lower beds convertible to one queen-size bed (Mariner's Dream™ bed).
  • A sitting area with a sofa bed for a third guest.
  • A bathroom with a dual-sink vanity, a full-size whirlpool bath and shower, plus an additional shower stall.
  • Floor-to-ceiling windows.
  • Access to standard suite amenities like a mini-bar, personalized stationery, fresh flowers, and bathrobes.

Key Differences (Location)

Category  Location Notes Specific Features
SS Generally located in desirable areas, often a deck higher than some other categories, and considered the "best" real estate within the Signature Suite class. Standard clear-view Plexiglas® verandah railings.
SU These are typically Spa Suites, located on the Panorama Deck (Deck 10). May have slightly different balcony configurations (e.g., narrow balconies). Guests receive additional spa-themed perks, such as organic bathrobes, a pedometer, and specialty bottled water.
SY Often located midship, some specific SY cabins have a slightly different layout or "jut out" that provides additional space, making them a popular choice for some guests. Some specific cabins in this category (SY5001, SY5002) are designated as fully accessible rooms with roll-in showers.
SZ Usually located in the very front (bow) of the ship and tend to be a lower price point or used for guarantee bookings. Cabins in this category may have solid steel verandah railings instead of clear-view Plexiglas® railings due to their forward location, which can obstruct the view when seated.

Neptune Suites (SA, SB, SC)
Available until January 31, 2026

Starting At: $3,595.00
Deposit: $600.00 per person

Eurodam Cabin SC6104 - Category SC ...
SA, SB, and SC all designate Neptune Suites; the primary differences are their specific location on the ship and their proximity to the Neptune Lounge. All three categories share the same core suite amenities and suite privileges.

Key Similarities
All SA, SB, and SC suites include the following features and Neptune Suite perks:
  • Size: Approximately 506–590 sq. ft. including the verandah (though specific configurations vary).
  • Beds: Two lower beds convertible to one king-size bed.
  • Bathroom: Dual-sink vanity, full-size whirlpool bath and shower, plus an additional separate shower stall.
  • Amenities: Large sitting area (with a sofa bed for two persons), floor-to-ceiling windows, private verandah, use of the exclusive Neptune Lounge (private concierge service, refreshments, worktables, etc.), complimentary laundry/dry cleaning, sparkling wine upon embarkation, and pre-dinner hors d'oeuvres upon request.
  • Club Orange privileges are automatically included.

Key Differences (Location)
The difference between the categories is based on location, which affects desirability and pricing:
  • Category SA: These are generally in the most desirable locations, often closer to the mid-ship elevators and the Neptune Lounge on the same deck.
  • Category SB: These suites are in good but slightly less central locations compared to SA, or sometimes on lower decks. Some popular SB suites are the aft corner-wraps, which have a smaller interior space but a much larger, wrap-around verandah offering a 270-degree view of the wake.
  • Category SC: These are considered the lowest-tier Neptune Suites, typically located the furthest from the Neptune Lounge or in less preferred locations. They are often used for "guarantee" bookings, where you are guaranteed a Neptune Suite but the specific cabin number is assigned later.
