Sanford High Alumni Cruise

Jul 9, 2022 to Jul 16, 2022
Canada and New England Discovery

The ports of New England and eastern Canada bear witness to fascinating histories and vibrant cultures that continue to thrive to this day. Approaching these cities from the sea offers a memorable perspective, much different from what residents typically experience: For many immigrants to North America, their first glimpse of their new lives would be from the decks of ships sailing into these harbors. While the fishing villages of New England and Canada's Atlantic Provinces embody a long seafaring tradition, neither region is frozen in time. World-class museums and celebrated restaurants sit side by side with historic sites. Whether you want to explore the early days of Canada and the United States or see what the future holds for their metropolises, a journey along North America’s Atlantic coast promises to be unforgettable.

Join us for an unforgettable summer adventure while supporting the bold initiatives of the Sanford Alumni Association.  Meet alumni from across the years, all sharing a common bond of walking the halls of Sanford High School, whether it be when the high school was Willard School or the "old" Sanford High behind the Memorial Gym.  If you sail with us, you'll be supporting the mission of the association by enjoying life-long connections and automatically be a financial benefactor in their fundraising efforts for the new Sanford High School.

Itinerary:

  • Embarkation Day (Boston, Massachusetts) Sail from this important seaport and get to know the ship you'll be making a home for the next few days.  Explore all that Holland America offers!  Breathe in that salty air and enjoy the journey to our next port of call.
  • Day 1 (Bar Harbor, Maine): Located on Mount Desert Island in Maine, Bar Harbor is the quintessential New England coastal town. Picturesque and charming, it is a scenic and walk-able town with streets lined with restaurants and boutiques. Dining on lobster is a must, as is a scoop or two at one of the town’s homemade ice cream shops.
  • Day 2 (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada): On a rocky inlet on the Atlantic, you'll find Halifax—Nova Scotia’s provincial capital—defined by its maritime geography. It's a spirited mix of world-class history and nautical-themed museums alongside bunkers and fortresses, plus striking public art, funky shops and excellent pubs serving up folk
  • Day 3 (Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada): Sydney is the largest city on Cape Breton Island,  here, the causeway links to the rest of Nova Scotia. Sydney’s attractions start at the harbor where visitors can shop for locally made crafts and see the world’s largest fiddle, which towers beside the port’s cruise pavilion.
  • Day 4 (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada): Charlottetown is the capital of Canada’s smallest province, Prince Edward Island, as well as its largest city, though it has fewer than 35,000 residents. Despite its modest size, the city has an impressive number of Victorian houses and great parks waiting to be explored.
  • Day 5 (Cruising the Gulf of St Lawrence, Canada): We will sail by St Paul's Island, known as the graveyard of the gulf, on your way through the Cabot Strait and into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. So huge is the gulf that half of Canada’s 10 provinces have a coastal connection to it. Perhaps that’s not surprising, considering that it’s the world’s largest estuary and fed all the way from the Great Lakes 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) away.
  • Day 6 (Quebec and St Lawrence River Cruising, Canada): Few places in North America are as steeped in history as Québec City, Canada. Older than Jamestown and founded before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, it is the only city north of Mexico whose original fortifications remain intact. The Québec City historic district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is still home to religious orders and hospitals that date back to the 17th century. Its Place-Royale would look familiar to the explorer Samuel de Champlain, even with its modern attractions of gift shops and cafés.
  • Day 7 (Montreal, Canada - Disembarkation): Montréal is a city of contrasts, one that defies a simple description. It sits on the New World’s St. Lawrence River, yet it has an undeniable Old-World French flair. It is a historic city, founded in 1642, and the streets are lined with sights that range from a 17th-century seminary to contemporary architectural masterpieces.
