Let's go to Iceland!

For this trip, we'll be traveling with G Adventures (see more about why we're excited about them below) on the 5-day Iceland Northern Lights & Golden Circle Tour. Here is how G Adventures describes the tour we selected:

Iceland's otherworldly aura seems to heighten in the winter months, when viewing the Northern Lights is at its peak and the contrast between the cool, crisp air and its steaming geothermic hot springs heightens. Couple that with hiking through Þingvellir National Park, meeting the famous Icelandic horse, exploring lava caves, and chasing waterfalls, and you've got yourself a spectacular winter adventure like no other.

What's included:

  • Accommodations: 2 nights in hotels, 2 nights in a guest house
  • Meals: 4 breakfasts, 2 dinners
  • Transportation to/from all included activities and between all destinations
  • Activities:
    • Lava caving (Leiðarendi Cave)
    • Meet the famous Icelandic horse
    • Golden Circle sightseeing
    • Þingvellir National Park visit
    • Geysir Hot Spring visit
    • Gullfoss waterfall visit
    • Northern Lights hunting (2 nights)
    • Southern coast drive including Skógarfoss waterfall and Seljalndsfoss waterfall

What's not included:

  • Airfare
  • Any meals not stated above
  • Mandatory travel insurance (required by G Adventures)
  • Optional pre- and post-tour accommodations
  • Optional activity: Glacier Hiking on Sólheimajökull (from Skogar)
  • Any other activities/sights you'd like to experience before or after the tour, such as the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon

Itinerary:

  • Day 1 (Reykjavik): Arrive anytime throughout the day. Get settled, then attend the Welcome Meeting where you can meet our CEO (Chief Experience Officer and guide for the trip) and fellow travelers, and learn more about our tour. Opt to join the group for a local meal afterward.

  • Day 2 (Reykjavik/Álftröð): Travel by private vehicle from Reykjavík to explore a lava cave in the Bláfjöll Mountains. In the afternoon, get up close and personal with the famous Icelandic horse before returning to Álftröð. In the evening, we will have our first chance to see the Northern Lights out in the countryside. (breakfast and dinner included)

  • Day 3 (Álftröð): Head to Þingvellir National Park. Visit sights like the Geysir Hot Spring and Gullfoss waterfall. In the evening, embrace your inner chef and prepare dinner together at the guesthouse. Afterward, we will have another opportunity to try seeing the Northern Lights. (breakfast and dinner included)

  • Day 4 (Álftröð/Reykjavik): Travel to Sólheimajökull glacier and take some time to explore the area, visit the Skogar Museum, or opt for a stunning glacier hike (additional cost). Drive the scenic southern coast and visit the Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls on the way back to Reykjavík. (breakfast included)

  • Day 5 (Reykjavik): Depart at any time. (breakfast included)

  • Note: G Adventures makes it really easy to add a hotel stay pre- or post-tour for a reasonable price. If you want to spend more time exploring Reykjavik, consider adding a night to your trip. We (Riki and Ellie) will be adding one night at the end of the trip and organizing a group to check out either the Blue Lagoon (about 30 minutes away from Reykjavik) or Sky Lagoon (a little closer to downtown Reykjavik) on Day 5.

Why we like G Adventures:

  • Groups are small (average 12, max 16)
  • Each tour is led by a CEO (Chief Experience Officer). This person is a local expert who will make this trip hassle-free and point us in the direction of all the best stuff Iceland has to offer.
  • Each tour has a Ripple Score, which is an evaluation of how often they use local businesses and services to create each tour and gives a percentage of local expenses that stay in the community. This tour has a score of 98 out of 100.
  • The company focuses on responsible travel, putting emphasis on environmental, animal, and child welfare around the world.

Cancellation policy:

All cancellation requests must be sent to Steady As We Roam in writing. Please review G Adventures' Book with Confidence Policy. Please see Steady As We Roam's Terms and Conditions for our full cancellation policy.

This trip does not have a single supplement. This means that the accommodation is on a twin-share basis and, if you are traveling on your own, you will be sharing a room with another G Adventures traveler of the same sex.

An optional service that may be available is called "My Own Room." This service allows solo travelers to request their own private room while on tour. The cost and the details vary by trip.
