São João festival in Porto
While in Portugal you will get to experience the most important night of the year São João festival in Porto. It is a festival that originated as a pagan festival back in the 14th century as a celebration and thanks to the sun god for a good harvest and abundance. It later was Christianized as a celebration to São João by the Church, but many pagan customs persist even to this day like the usage of wild leek, basil, and bonfires. This festival has been celebrated in Porto for about 700 years and it is truly apart of the city's identify
