Itinerary:

  • Day 1 : Arrival into Accra, transfer from airport to hotel. Welcome dinner at local restaurant for traditional dinner.
 
  • Day 2:  Begin your day with a tour of historical monuments and sites like the Black Star Square, independence Arch and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. Next, you will visit the bustling open air Makola market which is one of the largest in West Africa! Afterwards, enjoy of a variety of Ghanaian lunch dishes ranging from soups, starch based staples and a variety of meat and fish accompaniments.  Walk through James town, Ghana’s oldest suburb set on the coast of downtown Accra which boasts a fascinating history and vibrant local community. Watch women as they clean, prepare, smoke and salt some of the days catch for sale and preservation (this activity is not available on Tuesdays) while others prepare local delicacies like kenkey.  Later embark on a guided tour to another open air market in Accra, the arts center crafts market, where you will be introduced to different local handicrafts, artwork, carvings, sculptures, fabrics and souvenirs. Watch and learn how to negotiate for the best products , after which you can put your newly acquired bargaining skills to the test as you shop! End your tour by sampling an array of local deserts and beautiful handmade chocolate made from cocoa grown, harvested and prepared in Ghana. 
  • Day 3:  After breakfast, depart for the Volta region to visit a small village located along the bank of the Volta river. Upon arrival, be warmly welcomed with joyous singing, drumming and dancing by the locals. A simple naming ceremony which is a pillar of Ghanaian cultural heritage, will follow. Here you will be adopted as a member of the village and given a Ghanaian name, symbolizing your acceptance in the community. After the naming ceremony, there will be a cultural display of singing, drumming and dancing. Be sure to join in the celebration with your new clansmen! Finish your trip with a short boat cruise on the Volta River and return to Accra. 
  • Day 4:  A C C R A - B E S E A S E , B O N W I R E & K U M A S I C I T Y T O U R  Begin your journey to Kumasi where you will visit the Manhyia Palace Museum to obtain firsthand information on the legacies of the Ashanti kingdom. A regal history that dates back to 1700 is told with relics and artefacts. Enjoy a ride through the city with monuments dedicated to the memory of great Ashanti people.  Continue the journey to Kumasi with a stop at the Besease Shrine- a world heritage site, is a traditional fetish shrine near the town of Ejisu. Each of these shrines is a home for a particular spirit, called obosom that mediates between mortals and the supreme god Nyame. Behold the unique architecture and experience the mode of ancestral worship to the ancient gods.  Arrive in Kumasi, the seat of the Ashanti Empire to explore the legends of the famous Ashantis, whose legacies are still evident today. End the day’s tour at the National Cultural Center which features the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum and various studios of the brass makers, potters and batik makers. Afterwards, check in to your hotel in Kumasi for the night. 
  • Day 5:  S L A V E R I V E R & C A P E C O A S T C A S T L E Check out of your hotel and drive through the forest zone to Cape Coast. En route, stop at Assin Manso, the site of “Donkor Nsuo”, the former Slave River and market, the final transit point for a large number of enslaved Africans. This is the final resting place for two ancestors whose mortal remains were returned from the USA and Jamaica and re-interred there. The impact of the slave trade which took place centuries ago is still felt beyond the shores of Africa today. Visit the Cape Coast Castle built by the Swedes in 1653 which was later taken over by the British. This castle houses the West African Historical Museum established by the Smithsonian Institute in collaboration with the Ghanaian Government in 1994. The colorful harbor nestled below, full of canoes preparing to go to sea offers one of West Africa’s best photo opportunities. Overnight in Cape Coast 
  • Day 6:  A C C R A - D R U M & D A N C E W O R K S H O P  After breakfast, check out of your hotel and begin your journey to Accra. Enjoy the scenic ride as you drive through fishing villages, coconut lined beaches and other small villages en route to Accra.  Upon arrival, attend a private drum & dance session. This workshop explores traditional Ghanaian dance through performance modes of drumming and singing, within its cultural context. Come prepared to move and learn a traditional dance! Afterwards, check in to your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight at your hotel in Accra. 
  • Day 7: HEALTH CLINICS and A DAY OF GIVING
  • Day 8:  A morning of leisure.  Transfer to the airport for flight to USA

Cancellation policy:

All cancellations must be in writing. Deposits are fully refundable up to one hundred and twenty (120) days before departure, less $250.00 administrative fee per person. Cancellations from 119 days and up to 90 days before departure will receive a refund of 50% of the total amount. Cancellations from 89 days and up to 20 days before departure will receive a refund of 20% of the total amount. Cancellations after 20 days prior to departure will not receive a refund.
