The 1992 Summer Olympics revealed to the world what Europeans and seasoned travelers already knew - Barcelona is one of the world's greatest treasures. Vibrant and earthy, commercial and cultural, this city of two million residents is the capital of Spain's autonomous region of Catalonia. Stroll along the wide, tree-lined promenades of Las Ramblas and marvel at the spires of Gaudi's Basilica La Sagrada Familia. Or visit the former Olympic Ring on the hill of Montjuic - also home to world-class parks, fountains and museums. Barcelona, which nurtured such artistic giants as Picasso, Dali, Miro and Casals, is definitely a traveler's paradise.

Barcelona Points of Interest

  • Barri Gothic: Featuring labyrintine streets and the Cathedral of Santa Eulalia, the Gothic Quarter is the center of the old city of Barcelona. Some buildings date back to medieval times and the remains of a Roman wall are visible.
  • La Sagrada Familia: The Sagrada Familia, Barcelona's most idiosyncratic and flamboyant church, is regarded as architect Antoni Gaudi's masterpiece and has been under construction since 1882. It features breath-taking spires and awe-inspiring stained glass windows.
  • Montjuic / Olympic Stadium: This stadium hosted the opening ceremonies for the 1992 Olympic Games
  • Las Ramblas: Barcelona's famed promenade is alive and colorful with flower stalls and cafés. Stroll the old medieval quarter of Barri Gothic.
  • Montserrat Benedictine Monastery Complex: This wonderful monastery, considered Catalonia's most important religious retreat, is hidden high in the craggy Montserrat Mountains. The world's oldest publishing house, established in 1499, is also located here.
  • Park Guell: Designed by Antoni Gaudi, Catalonia's master architect, this glorious park features many works of wonder, including a serpentine-shaped bench, stunning views of the city and a mosaic dragon at the park's entrance.
  • La Pedrera: Known locally as Casa Mila, Gaudi's most accomplished, finished work features an ornate façade with undulating walls and iron art nouveau balconies.
  • Sitges: This delightful fishing village, 25 miles north of Barcelona, is popular with tourists thanks to its sandy beaches, café culture, galleries and museums, including the Maricel Museum which houses medieval paintings and sculptures.

Gibraltar

Arrives 7:00 am
Departs 4:00 pm

The Rock crouches over the sea like an ancient stone beast, looking Sphinx-like to Africa. Beneath the white cliffs of this natural fortress grows a profusion of palm, pine, and cypress. No fewer than 600 varieties of flowers thrive here, some not found anywhere else on Earth. Gibraltar's stunning setting is matched by its history - five countries have battled for 13 centuries to control the passage between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The result made for a cultural melting pot. Veiled Moroccan women in caftans and vacationing Englishmen and Spaniards stroll along the narrow, steep lanes. The locals revert to a liquid Spanish when talking among themselves. And visitors to a 15th-century cathedral pass through a blue-tiled courtyard, once part of a 13th-century mosque.

Helmeted bobbies, pillar-boxes and pubs make for a bit of Britain in the Mediterranean. Gibraltar is a fascinating place, from its caves and batteries to the Barbary apes gamboling on the slopes of the Rock.

Gibraltar Points of Interest

  • Apes' Den: Gibraltar's top attraction, tailless monkeys, known as Barbary Apes, congregate in this viewing area. The last remaining population of the species on the European continent, these playful primates are thriving.
  • Cable Car: A rapid ascent of the Rock of Gibraltar affords spectacular views of Europe, Africa and the sparkling Mediterranean. The Top Station is steeped in military history and home to the acrobatic Barbary Apes.
  • St. Michael's Cave: Explore the underground chambers of the Rock's largest cave filled with fine stalagmites, subterranean passageways and an unexpected amphitheater. The cave's formations are dramatically lit and displays detail the cave's history.
  • Europa Point / Rock of Gibraltar: The Rock is strategically placed where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet. The picturesque southernmost point is home to the striped lighthouse, the Shrine of our Lady of Europe and a domed mosque.
  • Great Siege Tunnels & Upper Galleries: Walk in the footsteps of British soldiers who carved tunnels out of solid limestone so that cannons could get through to the northern side of the rock, during the Great Siege of 1779 to 1783.
  • Gibraltar Museum: Housed in a restored, 18th-century building, the museum showcases the cultural and natural history of Gibraltar through the ages. Displays detail the Rock's geological origins, military involvement and connection to the sea.
  • World War II Tunnels: The Rock's WWII tunnels are the site of an exhibition featuring historic photographs and a complete tunnel map. Explore the facilities and various cave formations along with the stunning views from Jocks Balcony.
  • Kings Bastion: When the King's Bastion was built, it was the most important defensive position of the Rock's westerly defences. Its shape was based on traditional ideas of bastion fortification: it was a large arrow headed construction which projected from the curtain wall into the sea

Naples, Italy (for Capri & Pompeii)

Arrives 6:00 am

Italy's third-largest city, Naples is a bustling metropolis famed for it stately buildings, crowded streets, pizza - and notoriously bad traffic. However, this beautiful city is rich in centuries-old culture and customs. Naples is also your gateway to the Isle of Capri, the fabled Amalfi Coast and the ruins of Pompeii, buried in ash by the cataclysmic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D.

Naples boasts an ideal location, with both the ruins of Roman cities and the stunning Amalfi Coast in easy reach.

Points Of Interest

  • Pompeii: Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD and completely buried the city of Pompeii. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with fascinating ruins that hint of a once-thriving city.
  • Sorrento: This picturesque town sits on the cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples and boasts stunning views and seafood delicacies. It is also known for its Limoncello, a tangy lemon liqueur.
  • Capri: This gorgeous island destination off the Sorrento Peninsula has been a getaway for the rich and famous since Roman times. The city of Capri comprises the eastside and Anacapri lies to the west.
  • Amalfi Coast: The Amalfi coast and its namesake town offer miles of beautiful scenery-from the fragrant lemon groves dotting the lush landscape to the dramatic cliffs that meet the sea below.
  • Positano: Pastel houses tumble down the cliffs to a beach dotted with fishing boats. Long a draw for sophisticated travelers, Positano boasts elegant boutiques and seaside cafés.
  • Herculaneum: Discovered in 1709, Herculaneum was buried under mud in the 79 A.D. eruption. Excavations revealed its well-preserved Roman villas.
  • Mt. Vesuvius: This volcano destroyed the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Now dormant, it is a bucolic national park with many walking trails and a summit open to visitors.
  • Posillipo Hill: Capture a panoramic view of the city and the Bay of Naples from this vantage point.
