The Crop Over Festival in Barbados is a yearly celebration that typically occurs between July and August. The festival spans over a few weeks, with the most exciting part being the week leading up to Crop Over Kadooment day. In 2025, we will be celebrating Crop Over from August 1st to August 6th.
Kadooment Day is a public holiday celebrated every first Monday of August in Barbados. It marks the finale of the six-week Crop Over festival and is one of the most vibrant celebrations of all the holidays in Barbados.
Mas Bands, short for 'masquerade', involve participants dressed in elaborate costumes, masks, and accessories as they dance along the parade route. These costumes bring a creative and storytelling element to the heart of the carnival.
The tradition of Mas bands dates back to enslaved Africans who initiated their own costumed events in their communities after being prohibited from attending parties hosted by French plantation owners. Today, mas bands offer a participatory experience, welcoming the general public to join a band and purchase a costume.
