A coastal country on the Gulf of Guinea, Ghana's rich cultural diversity is celebrated throughout the country. The capital Accra is modernizing without losing its African roots as illustrated in contemporary artistic festivals such as Afrochella. Kumasi, the capital of the kingdom of the Ashanti gold, faithfully practices the rituals of Awukudae and Akwasidae, praising their king. The Dagomba, with their clay huts and thatched roofs, are reminiscent of Africa's pre-colonial era. Further north, the Gurunsi decorate their homes with frescoes and the Lobi build fortified houses with “minimalist” architecture.

Ghana's history is strongly linked to the grandness of the Ashanti Kingdom. During the Trans-Atlantic slave trade the Ashanti capital, Kumasi, was one of the most sophisticated and developed cities in all of Africa. The “Gold Coast” named by the Portuguese in the 15th century is home to ancient European forts indicative of the trade between Europe, Africa, and America. In particular, the Elmina and Cape Coast forts have been declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In 1957, the first President Kwame Nkrumah changed the country’s name to Ghana after one of the great West African empires and transformed the country into a republic, the first African nation to gain independence.

The climate of Ghana is tropical. The rainy season is from April through October. Daytime temperatures are often in the 80s and nights are balmy in the mid to upper 70s.

The Ashanti people were one of the most powerful nations in Africa until the end of the 19th century, when the British annexed Ashanti Country to their Gold Coast colony. The tribute paid today to the Asantehene (King) is the best evidence of their past splendour and strength.
