Prison Island is located a few kilometres off the coast of Stone Town, Changu Island became a strategic holding
place in the Arab slave trade. As the slave trade declined, the island was purchased by General Lloyd Mathews, the
First Minister of Zanzibar to be used as a prison. Though the jail was constructed, there are no records showing that it
was ever put in use. The structure, dating back to 1893 remains today and became the reason why the island has been
nicknamed Prison Island.
The group will depart in a Swahili dhow for Prison Island to visit the ruins and giant tortoises. You will then sail to Nakupende Island (Sand bank), this nowhere island is covered twice a day by high tide. This astonishing white sandy bank is surrounded by clear crystalline warm water, an ideal place to relax with only the sound of the waves.
