A QUICK HISTORY OF AFTERNOON TEA IN ENGLAND

Prior to the introduction of high tea into Britain, the English had two main meals: breakfast and dinner.

This didn’t suit The Duchess of Bedford, Anna Maria Stanhope (1783-1857). The Duchess, one of Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting, suffered from

‘a sinking feeling’ at about four o’clock in the afternoon.

At first, the Duchess had her servants sneak her a pot of tea and a few bread stuffs, but then began inviting friends to join her at five o’clock in her rooms at Woburn Abbey. The menu centered around small cakes, bread and butter sandwiches, assorted sweets and, of course, tea. The summer practice proved so popular that the Duchess continued it when she returned to London and high tea was quickly picked up by other social hostesses.

Originally, tea was an upper-class drink in Europe before gradually spreading through all classes and eventually becoming a common drink. Today, the English remain one of the top tea consumers in the world and tea is an important part of the British identity and is a prominent feature of British culture and society.

“There is no trouble so great or grave that cannot be diminished by a nice cup of tea.” – Bernard-Paul Heroux

Travel insurance is an essential component of any travel plan. It protects you from unforeseen events that can occur while traveling, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, lost luggage, and more. Here are some reasons why you should purchase travel insurance:

1. Trip Cancellation/Interruption Coverage - Travel insurance can protect you from financial loss if you have to cancel or interrupt your trip due to unexpected events such as illness, death, or weather-related issues. You'll be reimbursed for your prepaid expenses, such as airfare, hotel accommodations, and excursions.

4. Flight Delay/Cancellation Coverage - Travel insurance can provide coverage if your flight is cancelled or delayed due to weather or other unforeseen events. You'll be reimbursed for additional expenses incurred, such as accommodations and meals.
