This 12 day sailing includes 5 countries: Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia and Hungary!  Sail from Romania to Hungary’s capital of Budapest to experience river views like no other. Begin your Danube River vacation your way before your cruise with an overnight stay and sightseeing in Bucharest. Drive into the Carpathian Mountains to Sinaia to visit the grand Peles Castle. You’ll continue to Transylvania for two nights in Brasov. Take a guided tour of the city by day, followed by a tour of Dracula’s Bran Castle by night, and enjoy guided sightseeing in Bucharest. Enjoy superior hotel accommodations with complimentary breakfast, an expert Local Guide, and courtesy hotel-to-ship transfer.

Itinerary:

  • April 24 - Day 1 (Bucharest, Romania): Arrive and welcome to Bucharest—The “Paris of the East”
    The day is yours to relax and enjoy Bucharest. Spend some free time exploring this fascinating city on your own to discover its trendy shops, cafés, museums, beautiful homes, and churches along Victory Avenue. half-day tour of and get your bearings.  Stay at InterContinental Athenee Palace Bucharest, by IHG. This historic hotel was built in 1914.
 
  • April 25 - Day 2 (Bucharest-Sinaia_Brasov):  
    Drive into the Carpathians to Sinaia to visit Peles Castle. On the way, visit the legendary Cantacuzino Castle and enjoy a local lunch. This afternoon, continue to Brasov for the night. Peles Castle, the former summer residence of Romania’s royal family until 1947, is admired for its fairy-tale turrets and richly decorated interiors.
 
  • April 26 - Day 3 (Brasov & Bran Castle of Dracula Lore)

    Spend the day uncovering Transylvanian tales in and around Brasov. Enjoy a CLASSIC guided tour of Brasov, admiring its gothic, baroque, and renaissance architecture in the charming old town. In the evening, travel to Bran Castle, the 14th-century fortress often associated with the Dracula legend, dramatically set on a rocky hilltop. A CLASSIC guided tour reveals the castle’s history and stories, followed by an atmospheric dinner in this memorable location before returning to your hotel at Kronwell Brasov Hotel.

 
  • April 27 - Day 4 (Brasov-Bucharest-Oltenita (Embarkation)

    Join a Guided Excursion in Bucharest, see the Royal Palace Square—the scene of the city 's 1989 riots to overthrow the communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. In the afternoon, board your Suite Ship® Avalon Illumination for embarkation in Oltenita. 

 
  • April 28 - Day 5 (Rousse, Bulgaria. Veliko Târnovo & Arbanassi Excursion)

    From Rousse, travel inland for a full day exploring northern Bulgaria’s history and folklore. ACTIVE guests can explore Rousse’s old town by bike with the Adventure Host, while CLASSIC guests enjoy a guided tour to the former capital of Veliko Târnovo with its ancient stone houses clinging to cliffs above the Yantra River. You will discover one of Bulgaria’s oldest towns, dating back to around 4300 BC, and see beautiful examples of Bulgarian Revival architecture in the village of Arbanassi.  Another CLASSIC option features a guided sightseeing tour of Rousse’s largest port area and the imposing Holy Trinity Church, followed by a scenic drive through rock-hewn churches of Ivanovo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The evening brings live entertainment on board with a Bulgarian folklore show.

 
  • April 29 - Day 6 (Vidin, Bulgaria)

    Dock in Vidin, Bulgaria, and join your Adventure Host for an ACTIVE hike to the Baba Vida Fortress overlooking the Danube. Alternatively, choose a CLASSIC guided sightseeing tour to the western slopes of the Balkan Mountains, where you will marvel at Belogradchik’s dramatic rock formations sculpted by over 200 million years of natural forces. A DISCOVERY excursion reveals more than two centuries of Bulgarian winemaking history with a tour and tasting at a local winery. In the afternoon, continue cruising to Rousse with guided sightseeing and an overnight stay in port.

 
  • April 30 - Day 7 (Iron Gates Gorge - Golubac, Servia. Excursion to Lepenski Vir)

    Sail to the dramatic Iron Gates Gorge. On a CLASSIC excursion, visit the well-preserved Fortress of Golubac, a strategic stronghold that once controlled river traffic and defended the borders of the Habsburg Monarchy and the Ottoman Empire. Visit the Mesolithic archaeological site of Lepenski Vir to discover unique dwellings and artifacts over 8,000 years old. 

 
  • May 1 - Day 8 (Belgrade, Serbia)

    Arrive in Belgrade, Serbia’s lively capital at the confluence of the Danube and Sava Rivers. ACTIVE guests can join a guided bike tour along the riverbanks to explore the nooks and crannies of the city, while CLASSIC guests enjoy a guided sightseeing tour that showcases Belgrade’s highlights, including impressive Orthodox churches such as Saint Sava. A DISCOVERY onboard lecture later in the day offers deeper insight into the rich history, destinations, and culture of the Balkan states. You will also have free time to stroll Knez Mihailova Street, Belgrade’s central pedestrian thoroughfare filled with cafés, shops, and cultural spots, and in the evening you may opt for an additional excursion featuring a Bohemian dinner in the Skadarlija quarter.

 
  • May 2 - Day 9 (Novi Sad, Serbia)

    Explore Novi Sad, often called the “Athens of Serbia,” situated on the banks of the Danube. Choose an ACTIVE hike with your Adventure Host to the Petrovaradin part of town for panoramic views and insight into the city’s fortifications, or select a CLASSIC guided walking tour of Novi Sad, the second-largest town in Serbia, to admire its Austro-Hungarian old town, baroque buildings, and fortifications. A DISCOVERY excursion introduces you to local beekeeping traditions at the Honey Museum, where you can taste regional honey specialties and learn about this unique craft.

 
  • May 3 - Day 10 (Ilok, Croatia-Vukovar, Croatia)

    Ilok: Wine. Continue your day with a visit to Ilok, a Croatian town renowned for more than 1,000 years of wine-making traditions and a medieval fortress that protects its cultural heritage. On a CLASSIC guided tour you will explore the historic fortress, learn about Ilok’s role in regional history, and refresh your spirit with a wine tasting in a local cellar while hearing stories of Eastern Croatia’s winemaking culture.  ACTIVE travelers can instead join a guided bike tour along Ilok’s city walls, into the central church, and through the town’s museum on the way to Principovac Castle and Estate.

  

  • Vukovar: History and Beer. Visit the Adventure Center for today's activities with your Adventure Host. Or join a guided walking tour to discover the captivating culture and tradition of Vukovar and learn about its rich history and heritage. Then enjoy a brief cruise to Ilok while having lunch onboard.  In the evening, the ship sails toward Novi Sad with overnight docking in Novi Sad.

 
  •  May 4 - Day 11 (Mohacs, Hungary)
    On this Classic Excursion, join a morning Guided Sightseeing Tour of Mohács—the quiet Danube harbor town with its historical memorial parks, statues, and distinctive churches. Tour the remarkable medieval St. Nicholas Watermill—one of only a few remaining watermills performing stone-ground grain processing, OR Take a Classic Excursion Guided Tour to nearby Pécs to see its 4th-century Christian underground tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with fascinating murals. You’ll also enjoy an organ concert on your tour.
 
  • May 5 - Day 12 (Budapest): Disembarkation - Vacation ends after breakfast.
