This is where the history students read about stops being a chapter in a textbook and becomes something they can stand in front of, walk through, question, understand, and remember.

Over four packed days, our travelers will explore the monuments, memorials, museums, documents, and stories that helped shape the United States.

As well as yes... Mr. Guyer will have plenty of stories, questions, trivia, and probably a few historical scandals ready for the ride!

This isn't just about memorizing dates.

It's about understanding the people behind them.

🇺🇸 OUR WASHINGTON, D.C. ADVENTURE

DAY ONE — Welcome to Washington!

New Hampshire → Washington, D.C.

And we're off!

We'll leave New Hampshire behind and make our way toward our nation's capital.

Once we arrive, there is no easing into this trip.

We're going straight into history.

🕊️ 9/11 Pentagon Memorial

Our first experience is one that deserves reflection.

Students will visit the Pentagon Memorial and learn about the 184 lives lost at the Pentagon and aboard American Airlines Flight 77 on September 11, 2001.

The memorial's individual benches, reflecting pools, and carefully designed landscape give students an opportunity to understand the human story behind an event they may know primarily from textbooks.

📸 Washington Monument

Time for one of those pictures that says:

Yep. We're really in Washington.

We'll stop near the Washington Monument and take in one of the most recognizable landmarks in the United States, honoring our nation's first president.

🇺🇸 World War II Memorial

We'll visit the National World War II Memorial and discuss not only those who served overseas, but the enormous effort undertaken by Americans on the home front.

Look closely.

There is symbolism everywhere.

🌙 Lincoln, Vietnam Veterans & Korean War Veterans Memorials

As Washington begins to light up for the evening, we'll experience several of its most powerful memorials.

We'll stand beneath the enormous statue of Abraham Lincoln, walk alongside the names etched into the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and visit the haunting figures of the Korean War Veterans Memorial.

Dinner included.

Then it's back to the hotel.

Because tomorrow?

We're going to need our walking shoes.

🏛️ DAY TWO — Democracy, Documents & A Few Secrets

Breakfast included.

Today we get into the heart of American government and history.

🇺🇸 Capitol Hill

We'll explore the grounds of Capitol Hill while discussing the three branches of government and the institutions surrounding us.

The U.S. Capitol.

The Supreme Court.

The Library of Congress.

Places students have seen countless times in photographs suddenly become real places standing directly in front of them.

🎭 Ford's Theatre

History gets considerably darker here.

We'll visit Ford's Theatre, where President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, and explore the events surrounding one of the most infamous nights in American history.

Who was John Wilkes Booth?

Why Lincoln?

What happened afterward?

And how did the assassination change a country that had only just survived the Civil War?

Mr. Guyer may have a few stories for this one.

📜 National Archives Museum

Here's where things get REALLY interesting.

Students will have an opportunity to see some of the documents upon which the United States was built, including the:

Declaration of Independence

Constitution of the United States

Bill of Rights

They're not reproductions.

They're the real thing.

🏠 The White House

Of course we're getting the picture.

We'll stop near one of the most recognizable residences on Earth:

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Home and workplace of the President of the United States.

🎩 Lincoln's Top Hat

One of Mr. Guyer's favorite kinds of history:

the actual stuff.

At the Smithsonian, we'll have an opportunity to see artifacts connected directly to the people and events we've been discussing, including Abraham Lincoln's famous top hat.

🐋 Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History

Dinosaurs.

Gems.

Ancient life.

Human origins.

And yes...

That enormous whale.

Students will have time to explore one of the Smithsonian Institution's most popular museums.

🌙 Jefferson, FDR & Martin Luther King Jr. Memorials

We'll finish another extraordinary day among the memorials.

Thomas Jefferson.

Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Three enormously influential Americans.

Three very different periods of American history.

And plenty to talk about.

🏛️ DAY THREE — The People Behind the History

Breakfast included.

Today takes us from the earliest years of the United States through some of the darkest moments of the twentieth century.

🇺🇸 Mount Vernon

Welcome to the home of George Washington.

We'll explore Mount Vernon and learn about Washington not simply as the face on the dollar bill, but as a real person who lived here.

Students will experience the estate, grounds, gardens, educational exhibits, and the complicated history of the people who lived and worked at Mount Vernon.

🕯️ United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

This is one of the most important experiences of our trip.

Students will encounter the history of the Holocaust through artifacts, photographs, personal possessions, testimony, and individual stories.

It is an experience designed not merely to teach what happened, but to challenge visitors to consider the consequences of hatred, propaganda, prejudice, silence, and indifference.

🇺🇸 Smithsonian National Museum of American History

Now let's see some STUFF.

Centuries of American history are represented inside this museum through extraordinary artifacts and exhibits.

Politics.

War.

Culture.

Innovation.

Entertainment.

Presidential history.

And one particularly famous flag that helped inspire the words:

"The Star Spangled Banner."

🎖️ DAY FOUR — Honor, Service & One Last Look at Washington

Breakfast included. Hotel check out.

One final day.

And we're making it count.

🇺🇸 Arlington National Cemetery

We'll visit one of America's most solemn and meaningful places.

At Arlington National Cemetery, students will learn about military service, sacrifice, remembrance, and the generations of Americans buried here.

Our visit is expected to include some of Arlington's most significant sites, including:

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The Changing of the Guard

President John F. Kennedy's gravesite

Space Shuttle Challenger Memorial

and other notable memorials and gravesites as time and conditions permit.

🦅 United States Marine Corps War Memorial

Before leaving Washington, we'll make one more iconic stop.

The Marine Corps War Memorial depicts the famous flag raising on Iwo Jima during World War II, based on Joe Rosenthal's Pulitzer Prize winning photograph.

It's an unforgettable image.

And an appropriate place to reflect on everything we've experienced over the previous four days.

Lunch included.

Then...

🚌 WE'RE HEADING HOME.

Tired?

Probably.

Feet hurt?

Almost certainly.

But our goal is to come home knowing a little more about our country, our history, and perhaps even ourselves than we did four days earlier.
