Since created in 1920 in honor of the 300th Anniversary of the Pilgrims' landing, Pilgrim Memorial State Park has undergone many changes. Landfill has been brought in, the shoreline changed and a portico built to create protection around Plymouth Rock, monuments brought in to honor our Forefathers, and landscaping completed around the State Pier within the park.
The Mayflower II is anchored at State Pier, just minutes from Plymouth Rock. Climb aboard the full-sized reproduction of the ship that carried the Pilgrims to the New World. Built between 1955 and 1957 in Devon, England, the Mayflower II crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1957. It is used today to educate guests on the original Mayflower that sailed to Plymouth in 1620. From the solid oak timbers to the horn lanterns and hand-colored maps, the details of the Mayflower II have been carefully re-created to give visitors a sense of what the original 17th-century vessel was like. As you explore the cramped quarters of the ship, peer into the lower level “hold” where food, clothing, furniture, tools, and other items would have been stored during the journey of the Mayflower and admire the Master’s accommodations. You will encounter costumed interpreters, modern-day staff, and maritime artisans all eager to share interesting information about the Mayflower and the Mayflower II.
Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library
Learn about the life and legacy of President Woodrow Wilson at the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library in historic Staunton, Virginia as part of this group motorcoach vacation package. Located at 20 North Coalter Street, the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library was established so that both scholars and citizens would have a better understanding of what President Thomas Woodrow Wilson achieved throughout his lifetime and of his ideals that continue to impact the world today.
Thomas Woodrow Wilson was born in Staunton, Virginia in December of 1856 to parents Joseph R. Wilson and Janet Woodrow Wilson. Prior to Wilson’s presidency he was President of Princeton University and the Governor of New Jersey. Woodrow Wilson was sworn into office on March 4, 1913 as the 28th President of the United States and stayed in office until March 4, 1921. After his presidency, Wilson and wife Edith retired to an elegant town house in the Embassy Row section of Washington DC where just three years later, Woodrow Wilson passed away after suffering from a stroke and other heart-related problems.
