ITINERARY

Friday, September 15: Depart Boston
Most often, flights to Europe leave the US East Coast in the evening and arrive in the morning due to the time shift when you travel east. Air itineraries will be coordinated as much as possible, allowing the group to travel together. Nonstop may be an option to Lisbon, however your return from Porto will most likely include a layover/plane change. Our travel advisor will assist us as much as we'd like, or you will have the option of booking your own flights and/or using miles/points.

Saturday, September 16: Lisbon
Welcome to Portugal! Your trip starts today with your arrival in Lisbon, Portugal’s joyful capital city. You will be picked up from the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel. Get a meal at your leisure at one of the many outdoor cafes to soak up the city’s energy. In the evening, join your fellow traveling companions for a sunset cruise. Experience Lisbon's beauty as you set sail off its coast. As you sip a glass of Portuguese wine or beer and snack on appetizers like cheese and sausage, look out for sightings of major monuments like Belem Tower—your guide makes sure you don't miss any key sights.

Included Activities: Premium Airport Arrival Transfer,  Sunset Cruise with drinks & snacks

Sunday, September 17: Lisbon
Lisbon is one of Europe’s great cities, famed for beautifully renovated buildings, grand boulevards and impressive castles and churches. Take a ride on the historic Gloria cable car – this bright yellow funicular is one of Lisbon’s most photographed images. Then explore the trendy neighborhood of Bairro Alto, the popular Chiado area and the narrow, cobbled streets of Alfama, dotted with hole-in-the-wall eateries and charming old homes. Pop into a local establishment to try a pastel de nata, a sweet and delicious custard tart and Portugal’s most famous pastry. Visit one of the most symbolic buildings in the city, Lisbon Cathedral. Hear how the cathedral was built on the site of an old mosque in 1150 by Lisbon’s first bishop, Gilbert of Hastings. It wouldn’t be a tour of Lisbon without stopping off to sample some ginjinha, Portugal’s iconic cherry liqueur. The day is yours to discover the charms of Lisbon – perhaps roam through the delightful streets of distinct local neighborhoods, visit Belem Tower, or the spectacular Monastery of the Jeronimos.

To facilitate your exploration, you will have a 72-hour pass for the city's best Hop-On Hop-Off tour bus - the "Yellow Bus". You'll have access to the historic districts on the Belém Lisbon bus tour and the modern area with the Modern Lisbon bus tour. Plus, there's no better way than up the narrow streets of the hills with the Hills Tramcar tour.  Finally, you'll enjoy a cruise along the Tagus River with the Yellowboat.

This evening we will enjoy a group dinner together, which will include at least one glass of wine with your meal.

Included Activities: 72-hour combo ticket for Hills Tramcar + Belém Lisbon Bus + Modern Lisbon Bus + Yellow Boat river cruise,  Audioguide, free access to Santa Justa lift & funiculars, public trams, group dinner
Meals Included: Hotel breakfast, group dinner with wine

Monday, September 18: Day Trip to Sintra, Cascais and Pena Palace with Guided Tour (8:30am-4:30pm)

Benefit from a guided full-day tour of Sintra and Cascais that takes you through the top attractions, mountains, and coastal villages of the region. Depart from Lisbon to the Sintra mountains and stop at Pena Palace for a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to Cabo da Roca and Cascais for an in-depth experience of its natural beauty and traditions.

  • Park & National Palace of Pena: The tour begins with a visit to the romantic Sintra Mountains! Considered a World Heritage site this mountain range is full of palaces, mansions, cottages, convents, churches, chapels and shrines set amidst lush and surrounding vegetation. It has been the inspiration for great authors of European literature, abundant in archaeological remains that show that it has been occupied over numerous millennia. Guided inside visit Pena Palace.
  • Centro Historico de Sintra: You can stroll through charming streets in the historic centre of Sintra. We then climb the beautiful mountain roads to the most extravagant Portuguese palace, a fascinating fairy tale castle built in the ‘’romantic’’ Portuguese style.
  • Cabo da Roca: We resume the tour by passing through Sintra/Cascais Natural Park on the way to the western most point of continental Europe – Cabo da Roca, a place of infinite blue and a superb view of the Atlantic Ocean at its most wild.
  • Centro Historico de Cascais: Followed by an overview of Guincho beach, as ones may enjoy a ride by the coastline road on the way to Cascais, a sophisticated and charming village with a lovely bay. Our guide shall accompany you along the way, sharing stories and curiosities about the visited (and seen) places.
  • Before heading back to Lisbon, we will pass by Casino Estoril, the largest casino in Europe. The drive back from Cascais to Lisbon is approximately 50 minutes.

Not included: Food/beverages

Tuesday, September 19: Free Day to Explore (Optional Day Trip)

Today, you have the day to explore the city. You also have the option of a day trip (additional cost).

OPTIONAL DAY TRIP: Fátima, Óbidos and Nazaré  (8:30am-5:30pm)

Cost: $105
Experience the rich heritage and stunning countryside of Portugal on this small-group guided day trip to Fátima, Óbidos and Nazaré from Lisbon. On your tour, discover one of the Christian religion’s most significant pilgrimage sites, Fátima. Here, learn about the children who, in 1917, saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary (Our Lady of Fátima). You will also visit the small medieval town of Óbidos, glimpse into a fisherman’s life in the seaside village of Nazaré and marvel at the ornate architecture of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Batalha Monastery. During your journey, savor landscapes that boast beautiful Atlantic coast views, verdant hills and impressive bluffs. This is a small-group tour, ensuring you’ll receive more personalized attention from your guide.

  • Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima: Get comfortable in an air-conditioned vehicle as you start your journey toward the town of Fátima, a once-sleepy rural village that became an important pilgrimage site when three shepherd children reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary in 1917. Visit the Sanctuary of Fatima, a basilica that honors the apparition and attracts millions of Catholic pilgrims every year who go to pay their respects to the shrine.
  • Batalha Monastery: Next, visit the 14th-century Batalha Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that illustrates the rich artistic heritage of the late 1300s. Discover the impressive royal burial site at the basilica’s Founder’s Chapel, where King João I, Queen Philippa of Lancaster and their son Prince Henry the Navigator were buried. Note that we only visit the main church area, which is free of charge. To visit the whole structure (which we don't have much time), cloisters included, an additional charge is required (to be paid by the client directly to the local ticket office).
  • Praia da Nazare: Take a short break for lunch (own expense) in Nazaré, a quaint fishing town famous for its variety of restaurants and cafes. A popular summer retreat for the Portuguese, the village offers an interesting insight into local life. Short stop at the Nazaré cliffs to see the ocean views.
  • Pass through the picturesque villages of Foz do Arelho and São Martinho do Porto. Admire views of agricultural fields and the Atlantic Ocean as you drive along the dramatic, cliff-lined coast.
  • Obidos Village: Finally, make your way to the medieval village of Óbidos. Founded in 208 BC, Óbidos is commonly known in Portugal as the 'wedding present town', as it was a gift from King Dinis to Queen Isabel on their wedding day in 1282. Follow your guide to one of the numerous wine shops and sample the Ginja liqueur, and then enjoy free time to explore the village’s medieval fortress, narrow streets, colorful houses and Gothic doorways and windows decorated with flowerpots and dazzling tiles. Grab a snack or browse around the tiny shops that offer a varied collection of beautiful handmade ceramic art before making your way back to Lisbon.

Optional Activity: Day trip via air-conditioned minivan with local guide, ginja liqueur tasting (Not included: Guided visit inside the monuments and buildings, visits to the cloisters and the unfinished chapel of the Monastery of Batalha)
Meals Included: Hotel breakfast

Thursday, September 21: Porto

Porto might be the second-largest city in the country after Lisbon, but it is not the second best! 280 km (174 miles) north of Lisbon, the beautiful city of Porto lies along the Douro River. Home to Port wine, street art, and “francesinhas”, Porto is one of the world’s top 100 cities with the most international visitors. One of the oldest in Europe, Porto’s old town in the city center is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996! This evening, our group will meet a collective of professional Fado artists who share a passion for Traditional Fado (a branch of Fado, considered the purest one). This style considered the genuine art of Fado, combines all the aesthetics and authenticity of this music genre. Before the concert, you will have the opportunity to talk with the musicians. They will explain to you the different styles that are usually played in Fado concerts with musical examples and why the traditional style is the most artistic one. Before the concert, you'll be offered Port wine. At the concert, you won't hear mainstream setlists or any other styles like "Marchas de Lisboa" or Folk Music, often called Fado for tourists or commercial Fado. It's the only concert in Porto fully dedicated to authentic and artistic Fado. Silence at the concert is required. Music will be played by a typical trio: a "Fadista" (the term for a Fado singer), a classical guitar player, and a Portuguese guitar player. At the concert, you'll hear two fado singers: a man and a woman. You will hear 12 Fados and 2 instrumental songs.

We know it is difficult to make time for a vacation these days. We're all so busy. And with the complexities of travel options and information overload, it can be so overwhelming to try to plan an amazing trip. That's where we come in. We are big nerds who love this stuff. Details, research, spreadsheets, planning, phone calls, and negotiating...we live for it. We love to listen to your needs (and wants!) and develop a plan for you, taking care of every little detail.

My name is Christie Costello, the founder of GlobeSage Travel and Toastable Travel & Events, and my own passion for travel began as a kid. My family moved around a lot, and I had to adapt to new places quickly. As I got older, I learned more about different cultures. I enjoy being a student of culture and growing my cultural intelligence (CQ). I especially like going to places very different from my home, meeting the people, trying the food.

My type of dream adventure might not be everyone's. But when I plan for you, I plan with you in mind. What types of things do you love to do? What limitations do you have? What have been your favorite vacation experiences? What has gone wrong that we want steer clear of? I find joy in the creation of a journey that exceeds your expectations and becomes the new "best trip" you've ever taken...every time!

Let's plan something amazing and unforgettable together! And then, you will get to kick back and relax, knowing that you are in good hands.
