Tentative Itinerary

Day 1 — Downtown & The Greatest

Morning

  • Muhammad Ali Center — deep dive into Ali’s life, civil rights work, and global legacy. Plan 1.5–2 hours.  Muhammad Ali Center+1

Lunch

  • Grab a quick bite on Main/4th Street — lots of downtown options within walking distance.

Afternoon

  • Frazier History Museum — “The Journey” walking tour (starts at the Frazier). This is a free, storytelling walking tour covering Underground Railroad/Black freedom stories in downtown Louisville — great context to pair with Ali’s story. (Check Frazier schedule for dates/times.)

Evening (optional)

  • Evan Williams Bourbon Experience — “The Ideal Bartender/Tom Bullock” segment (spotlights Louisville native Tom Bullock, an early Black American bartender/author). There’s a special experience/tasting that highlights his story — Great way to close Day 1.

Day 2 — Museums, Neighborhoods & Freedom Park

Morning

  • Roots 101 African American Museum — modern exhibits celebrating Black art, culture, innovation and regional history. Allow 1–2 hours.

Midday

  • Walk/ride to the Portland neighborhood / Portland Museum — Portland is historically important to Louisville’s Black community and to river-crossing routes for freedom seekers. The Portland Museum highlights neighborhood culture.

Afternoon

  • Freedom Park (University of Louisville) — outdoor obelisks and panels about slavery, the Underground Railroad, and local Black history — free and powerful. Great for reflective walking.

Day 3 — River & Rural Black history

Morning → Afternoon

  • Riverside — the Farnsley-Moremen Landing (on the Ohio River) — archaeological & river-front history including stories about enslaved people, labor on the river, and the region’s Black heritage. Guided tours available by appointment.

Late afternoon / wrap

  • Self-guided drive or audio tour following Kentucky’s African American Heritage Trail highlights in and around Louisville.
