Paris is the capital city of France.
Black Americans traveled to France for opportunities denied in America during the 20th century. James Baldwin (writer) said he arrived to Paris with $40 in his pocket, longing for a better life. He didn't know what the future held in France, but he certainly had foresight as to what would happen if he stayed in New York. Paris is also where the late Josephine Baker danced and ate lunch with her pet cheetah named Chiquita. Paris was also known for great artists like Lois Mailou Jones and Beuford Delaney.
