Touch down in Hawaii this month and you’ll find the islands in full bloom. The crowds from the spring break are almost gone, summer hasn’t kicked in yet, and the weather hits that sweet spot — sunny but not stifling, with calmer ocean waves and cooler trade winds in the evenings. It’s also when mangoes start making their way into everything, from beachside smoothies to poke bowls.

But what really makes Hawaii in May special is the perfect balance it strikes between rest and revelry. You get the full experience of the peak season without the stress of hectic travel. The hiking trails are open and green from the rains, the beaches are uncrowded, and it’s the right month if you want to experience festivals like Lei Day and the start of bon dance season.

An advisor on TravelJoy can help you find the best of the season, especially if you’re hoping to island-hop or avoid areas that receive late spring showers.

Is May a good time to visit Hawaii?

Yes, May is a wonderful time to experience Hawaii, and for more reasons than just the weather. This month comes just before the state hits peak summer, which means you get Hawaii’s famous sunshine without the crowds or steep prices. Temperatures hover comfortably between the low 70s and 80s, and the trade winds keep the islands breezy and comfortable.

The oceans are also calm this time of the year, making it safer to try snorkelling or paddleboarding. You’ll find it easier to book the best hotels and excursions, especially on less touristy islands like Molokaʻi or Lānaʻi. Flights also tend to offer better deals in May than in June or December. This is also when the Lei Day celebrations take place across the islands, so you get some cultural flavor without the chaos of high season.

There’s one small trade-off, though. Some regions may experience light showers, especially on the windward coasts. But an advisor on TravelJoy can help you avoid these spots. With their expert assistance, you can balance beach time with hikes on the drier side of the islands. You can even attend local events and take scenic drives through the countryside.

Where to go in Hawaii in May

Oʻahu – Honolulu & the North Shore
Hawaii in May lets you experience the cultural heart of the islands before the summer surge. This month brings calmer waters on the North Shore, so you can safely explore beaches that are usually reserved for pro surfers. In Honolulu, it’s Lei Day on the 1st of May, and Kapiʻolani Park fills with floral parades, hula, and live music.
Big Island – Hilo & Volcanoes National Park
This time of the year is perfect for hikes to Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls, which are especially lush thanks to late-spring rains. Volcanoes National Park is drier in May, so you can choose to visit if you want a trail that is easier to hike. If you’re there at the right time, you can even spot the early ʻohiʻa blossoms carpeting the trails in a vibrant red.
Maui – Upcountry & Hana Highway
Most of the upcountry farms in Kula and Makawao are in full bloom this month. May marks the start of the lavender season at Aliʻi Kula. But there’s more. On the Road to Hana, you’ll spot mangoes just beginning to ripen and waterfalls flowing strong but not wild. The weather’s still dry enough to drive the full route without any stress about getting caught in a spell of rain.
Kauaʻi – South Shore
Poʻipū Beach is warm and sunny in May. It’s a magical time to hit the snorkeling spots like Lawai Beach, where the water is so clear, you can spot tropical fish even if you don’t dive deep. The Nā Pali Coast boat tours also begin running daily once more, often across calmer seas. What’s more, this is a great time to spot wildflowers along the Mahaʻulepu Heritage Trail before it gets too hot.
