In April, Greece finally feels open to travelers as the markets spill out onto the streets and locals stop to chat instead of rushing through the cities. By mid-month, lilac and almond blossoms scatter across olive groves, and Easter preparations add a steady energy to the streets. As spring picks up speed, the olive oil mills start up once more, cherry trees bloom in Pelion, and ferry services operate at full capacity for explorers and locals.

If you look closer, you’ll see that Greece in April buzzes with a sense of renewal. It’s evident in the wildflower-strewn trails near Delphi, early-season ouzeries reopening across many towns, and the sudden return of activity at seaside cafés. An advisor on TravelJoy can help you sync your trip with ferry schedules, Easter events, and other experiences unique to this month, so you don’t miss that midnight procession or end up stuck with a schedule that includes a closed route.

Is April a good time to visit Greece?

Yes, if you’re a shoulder-season traveler, April may be the best time for you to visit Greece. It’s when cherry and almond blossoms flower in places like Pieria and the Peloponnese, turning villages into fragrant pockets of color. You can also expect warmer days and cooler nights across the country. Athens and Crete, for instance, enjoy sunshine and highs in the upper 60s, while northern areas like Thessaloniki see daytime temps in the low 60s. Rainfall is only sporadic — often a quick shower in Thessaly and the surrounding regions, making hillside trails drier and easier to hike.

Beyond the weather, there are more reasons to travel to Greece in April. Popular historical sites and museums are also fully back in action. Seaside cafes buzz with locals and tourists again. And places like Thessaloniki, Pieria, Katerini, and Kalavryta bustle with spring festivals. However, some towns may still be less lively during this time. You can make that work to your advantage and soak in the local culture without the usual hustle found in hot tourist spots.

If you want to strike the right balance between fast and slow travel, an advisor on TravelJoy can be the friend you didn’t know you needed. They can help you factor in the ferry schedules, plan around key festival dates, and look for the best hotel upgrades available.

Where to go in Greece in April

Delphi
If you’re in this part of Greece in April, make sure you stop to marvel at the wildflowers growing along the paths to the Temple of Apollo. You can walk among blooms under clearer skies because the mornings here are calm and unhurried. Later in the day, you can stop at a nearby café for a late brunch or an early lunch, and savor the town’s fresh goat cheese topped with local thyme honey.
Pieria & Katerini
Around mid‑April, the cherry orchards around Katerini burst into bloom. You can do what the locals do and picnic under the pale pink canopies of blossoming branches. It’s also the right time to indulge in some local delicacies like loaves of tsoureki and cherry-spiced pastries. Consider including this in your itinerary if you want to slow down for a while between two packed days.
Thessaloniki
This city hosts Photosynkyria, or the International Festival of Photography, which runs into mid‑April. You can wander into galleries and cafés that feature large-format photography and showcase filmmaker talks. It's perfect for you if you appreciate visual storytelling and prefer spaces where art invites you to slow down and really take a closer look.
Corfu
If you’re in Corfu Town around Holy Saturday, you will love the energy of the island’s ancient pot-smashing tradition. It’s exactly what it sounds like. People throw clay pots off their balconies, and it gets loud, chaotic, and frankly, kind of amazing. The idea is to smash out the old and make way for the new, and the whole town shows up to watch. By midnight, the Old Fortress glows with fireworks, making it an experience you’ll never forget.
