When the almond trees blossom across the Peloponnese, the sunlight stretches into the late afternoon over olive groves, and the slate-blue sea is a sight to behold. As the winter chill fades, the ferry routes between islands become busier and hiking trails start to dry and become walkable. Hotel prices also drop temporarily before the next season’s rush. Together, these experiences make Greece in March come alive with the promise of early spring.

You tend to feel it in many ways: in mornings that are crisp but not cold, and in afternoons that are warm with clear skies. Little streetside cafés buzz with locals sipping Greek coffee outdoors, and you can walk into seaside ouzeries without waiting for hours. An advisor on TravelJoy can help you time your ferry rides, score a table at a quiet coastal taverna, and make the most of your trip to Greece this month.

Is March a good time to visit Greece?

Yes. Planning a trip to Greece in March may be worth it if you’re not expecting summer energy. Popular sites like the Acropolis are open but not crowded, and prices for flights and hotels are some of the lowest all year. Ferries start operating again mid-month, and spots like Nafplio or Chania are already showing signs of spring — think blooming almond trees and fishermen back at the docks. By late March, bakeries heat up their ovens for Easter.

The Greek Independence Day, which falls on March 25, brings parades and brass bands into the mix. You can catch these sights best in Athens, which feels like it’s halfway between winter coma and summer celebration. Overall, it’s a good month for slow mornings, uncrowded museums, and last-minute dinner plans that still work.

Some places, especially on smaller islands, may still be shaking off the winter lull, so timing matters a great deal. One village may feel lively, while the next may still be idle. An advisor on TravelJoy can help you plan around these gaps, find which ferry routes are running, and discover which towns are actually back in business.

Where to go in Greece in March

Nafplio
Nafplio hosts its Anapliotika Carnival in late February and early March. So, this is when the old town turns into a live masquerade celebration. Masked marchers, jugglers, and harlequins parade through Venetian-style alleys. Latin beats echo off the cobblestones. And you can taste loukoumades —honey drizzled dough bites — fried on the spot as you laugh with the locals throwing confetti in every square.
Thessaloniki
If you’re big on real stories, Thessaloniki’s Documentary Festival is a must-see. The city opens its cinemas and port warehouses for these screenings. You can slip into a screening room with a Greek coffee in hand, settle onto wide seats, and watch emerging filmmakers unpack global stories. Between films, you can sample souvlaki from the street carts and talk to the volunteers long after the credits roll.
The Peloponnese countryside
This may be a nice idea for the nature-lover in you because March brings pale pink and white almond blooms across the Peloponnese. You can stroll through the quiet country lanes dusted in soft petals and stop at roadside stalls selling spiced honey pastries. This only lasts for a short window though, so best be prepared for early morning hikes to catch the sights without the rush.
Athens
Every March, about 20,000 runners lace up for the Athens Half. If you’re in the city around this time, you can spot them weaving through the iconic streets and past ancient ruins, focused on completing the loop. It’s also the perfect opportunity to blend into the crowds as they cheer the runners on. After the race the city feels more alive than ever — the brunch spots fill with celebratory chatter from newcomers and old-timers alike and the bars stay open late into the night.
